The Badchan

The Badchan
Ariela Krasney

The Jewish Badchan has many faces: from that of the clown (leiz), who wandered from place to place during the Middle Ages together with non-Jewish performers, to that of the wedding preacher (muserzoger). The author traces the course of the badchan from its roots in the German "narr'', the Italian harlequin and other European jesters, to its final development as a character with two personalities - one side serious, sermonizing and learned, the other amusing, entertaining and carnivalesque.
