Description
Compared to other Jewish communities in the Middle East, Syrian Jewry was relatively small, but its influence was evident beyond its size. The study of Syrian Jewish communities, and the communities around the world that they have emigrated to, have improved in recent years. The twenty-four chapters in this bilingual volume examine a wide range of fascinating topics, including Syria's status in Jewish law, changes in the political status of the Jews, the history of Jews in Syria, literature and culture, architecture, synagogues, music and liturgical tradition. Prominent personalities are the subject of thorough and innovative research, and new light is shed on the immigrant communities in the Diaspora.
The volume spans various disciplines, written by researchers from Israel and around the world, making use of unique research methods and relying on sources ranging from archival sources to field research and interviews. Some articles are a summary of many years of research and some will be used as a basis for further studies.
The articles are based on lectures delivered at the international conference "Syrian Jews: History, Identity and Culture", held at Bar-Ilan University, organized by the Aharon and Rachel Dahan Center for Culture, Society and Education in the Sephardic Heritage.
